Winning Contracts
August 2011

A plethora of public sector external refurbishment contract has been secured by Forster since April, including several programmes for new clients.  Two roof renewal projects, in Arklay and Corso Street are being completed for Dundee City Council.  Works are underway at Middlefield Crescent and Middlefield Terrace for Aberdeen City Council and have been completed at Strathtay Avenue in Netherlee, East Renfrewshire, for Trust Housing Association.  Forster are also currently delivering programmes for Weslo Housing Management and Almond Housing Association in Livingston, Atrium Housing Association in Stewarton and Kilmarnock and various projects as part of existing framework agreements with Fife Council and City of Edinburgh.

Energy Monitoring
July 2011

Reducing carbon emissions, wastage and cost were behind Forster’s decision to install an energy monitoring system at their Brechin head office.  The Ewgeco system displays electricity, water and gas consumption as well as renewable energy production, using an easy to understand traffic light display that rises and falls in real time.  By showing the actual cost, kilowatts, litres/hour and CO2 emissions, it’s helping Forster understand and manage their energy consumption.

Case Study: Sacred Heart's Church
July 2011

The refurbishment of this beautiful Grade B Listed church in Aberdeen provided Forster with an opportunity to showcase some outstanding workmanship.  Forster completed the works for main contractor Robertson Construction.  Under the watch of Historic Scotland, 25 panels and 4 conicals were stripped and re-tiled using Rosemary clay plain tiles.  Particular attention must be drawn to the meticulous skill that went into the conicals (covering a roof area of 409m²), where battens were notched and thousands of tiles carefully measured and chamfered twice to create a spectacular roof-scape.

Long Term Fix
July 2011

When specifying Roof PV it is essential that you consider the long term impact the installation will have on the integrity of the roof structure.  It is always important to consider the installer’s knowledge of roofing specifications and details.  Forster Managing Director, Steve Scott explained “With the severe wind and rain conditions that we experience in Scotland (compared with the rest of Europe) it becomes particularly important to ensure that any Roof PV installed, stays fixed and weather-tight for years to come”.

Why PV? or What PV?
July 2011

The attraction of receiving an annual return on investment of around 10% for 25 years is easy to understand in today’s world and, given the outlook for energy prices, it seems the question should be ‘What PV’ not ‘Why’.  It seems likely that fears about the Feed in tariff (FiT) have probably been overplayed.  Yes, it will almost certainly be reduced over time.  However, with estimates of PV panel prices falling as much as 20% this year, the opportunity for homeowners, tenants and social landlords to benefit significantly from new Roof PV installations is likely to remain well beyond April 2012.

Integrated and On-Top
July 2011

A recent roof renewal at Forster’s head office provided the opportunity to install Redland’s recently launched ‘On-Top’ and ‘Integrated’ Roof PV systems.  The discretely integrated system requires no mountings or fittings; runs neatly across a single course of tiles, blending in with the roof design; and provides a more secure and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional on-top systems.  Forster are offering an open invitation to readers to come and see the systems operating and learn more about their options for Roof PV installation.

Solar PV with Confidence
July 2011

You can now have your Solar Roof PV installed by Forster, one of Scotland’s largest roofing specialists.  Launching their new campaign at the CIH Maintenance & Asset Management conference, Forster will be displaying what is probably the country’s best looking integrated Roof PV system.  The systems supplied by Redland, one of the world’s largest roofing products manufacturers, represents the leading design in Roof PV.  Forster combine a wealth of technical roofing experience with in-depth knowledge of PV systems.  So you can choose your solar PV with confidence.

A Tile That Improves Air Quality
March 2011

A Forster re-roofing project with significant benefits to the environment was recently delivered for Fife Council.  Marley Ecologic roof tiles were fitted to homes in Coaltown of Wemyss.  The Ecologic tile improves the surrounding air quality by absorbing nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide (NOx).  It is also manufactured using 50% recycled materials, making it one of the most environmentally beneficial roofing products available.  The tile can achieve an A+ rating in the Building Research Establishment's Green Guide to Specification.

Roofing for Roofers
April 2011

A creative approach to keeping out the weather has enabled Forster to overcome the challenge of the severe winter conditions. A canopy was erected over the 700m² roof at the historic Camperdown House in Dundee by Main Contractor Muirfi eld Contracts and refurbishment work was able to continue almost unaffected by the arctic conditions.

On the road again...
April 2011

Increased market optimism and a growing order book have led Forster to launch a nationwide campaign to recruit qualified and experienced roofers.  Following a massive response several new roofing squads have been appointed to strengthen Forster’s construction team and as a result new vans will soon be seen all over Scotland.  More squads will be appointed in the coming months.

The Experience is Everything
April 2011

As part of their 2011 ‘Customer Experience’ initiative, Forster will soon be introducing a new customer feedback opportunity on completion of each contract.  Forster already collect, analyse and provide detailed reports to their clients based on the tenant experience.  Following the success of their tenant feedback surveys for refurbishment contracts Forster are keen to hear their customer’s views.

Change At The Top
November 2010

Forster Roofing have appointed a new Managing Director. Steve Scott, formerly Commercial Director at Forster joined the company in January 2000.  A Quantity Surveyor, Steve has successfully held a number of positions at Forster Roofing including the last 4 years as head of the commercial team.  Forster Group Chair John Forster said ‘As an experienced, considered, able and committed member of the Forster team, Steve’s step up to the role of Managing Director represents a great opportunity not only for him but for the company as a whole and in particular for all of us who work with him’.

Case Study: Drum of Garvock
November 2010

An award winning project for a Ryder Cup winning captain!  Architects Yeoman McAllister created a stunning design for the mansion house near Dunning owned by Europe’s Ryder Cup winning captain Colin Montgomery.  Forster completed the slating works which covered an area of over 1,000m² across 23 roof panels, including a spectacular turret. Cupa Heavy 3 Spanish Slate was selected due to its rough surface and close resemblance to the traditional highland slate Ballachulish. 16 valleys and 5 mitred hips were expertly cut to create a striking roof scape.  The scale and complexity of the project typifies the high level of skill and workmanship provided by Forster.
